Dragons

Worklog

Throughout history, there has been no creature, real or imaginary, that has captured the amazement and imagination of man quite like the dragon. From ancient Chinese drawings to medieval quests to Hindu gods, the image of reptilian majesty is everywhere. Therefore, it's probably no great surprise to see someone use it as a case design.

The Dragons mod done by Ulysses Cazuquel is a fitting tribute, then - the work is hand-cut from a junker of an old case, but is shaping up to be an amazing project. It seems Ulysses has a knack for all things Dremel and cutting, as there are incredibly impressive side panels and top. And that's just what's completed so far!

Of course, I could blather on about it, or I could get down to his excellent handiwork. So, here goes...

Dragons has started out life as a very boring, bog standard case. An ugly case, in fact. One could even say very ugly. But that was all about to change - you can tell from the first stencil that Ulysses applied, which would trace out his cutting route, that this was not going to be some normal hack job.

Slowly, carefully. Slooooowly, caaareeeffully. That's about the only way to describe the painstaking and methodical detail necessary for the 90 (ninety!?!) different cuts that went into this side panel.

It's easy to see that the results were worth it, however. To the left is the piece removed from the panel, still almost whole. In fact, when the other little chunks are arranged, it's hard not to think you're looking at the final work. That is, of course, until you look to the right picture, where you can see the window for Dragons in all of its glory.

A single side panel, no mater how artfully done, is hardly something to drool over though. So, Ulysses just went ahead and did the top, too. The top panel contained a design of similar intricacy, but it was considerably smaller - making for some very hard cuts. However, it looks like he pulled it off well enough - the cleaned aluminium shines off of a gorgeous top panel.

We'd be lying if we said that this wasn't enough to impress us, but we'll be looking forward to see how far Ulysses takes this dragon theme. At some point, the fancy cuts will undoubtedly give way to an attractive overall package - but we'll just have to see exactly how that turns out. Until then, we'll just keep an eye on his worklog in our forums.
